The at-home self-tan guide

How tan do you
want to go?

A little sun-kissed or a deep, just-back-from-vacation bronze. Tell us what you have in mind. We'll help you find a self-tanner to start with.

02 / Pick your finish

A hint of color.
Or all out bronze.

Think about the tan you want to wear. Then choose the formula and follow its directions. Light, medium, and deep describe your goal here, not three shades available in every product.

Your starting tone and application affect the result. Need a hand choosing a base? Ask the JMT team.

A little sun-kissed

Just a touch of warmth. Look at the Light lotion options, or the lighter-result directions for your chosen foam.

Like I just got back

A noticeable bronze. Compare the development guidance on your chosen formula instead of reaching for the darkest option automatically.

Make it a deep bronze

For a richer finish, explore the Dark lotions or your foam's deeper-result instructions. More product or extra time is not always better.

03 / Get to know the JMT color families

There's more than one way to golden.

These are JMT's professional spray solution families. At-home products have their own available formulas and sizes, so check the individual product before choosing. Buying for a salon? Visit JMT professional.

Good questions. Real answers.

Let's clear
a few things up.

Ask JMT a question
Do I need the same shade as someone with my skin tone?

Not necessarily. Your starting tone, undertones, desired depth, and application all affect your result. Use this guide as a starting point, then check the product directions or ask JMT for personal guidance.

What's the difference between a solution and a self-tanner?

Professional spray solutions are intended for spray application with compatible equipment. Foams, lotions, mists, and serums have their own at-home application directions. A gallon of solution is not a substitute for a ready-to-use lotion.

Is One Hour Tan the same as Rapid Tan?

No. One Hour Tan lists 30, 60, and 90-minute rinse choices. Rapid Tan options in other families have different instructions. Follow your exact product's directions. Rinsing does not mean your final color has finished developing.

Should I choose by undertone or by depth?

They answer different questions. The color family describes the tone of the formula, while depth describes the level of color you're choosing. Compare both, and ask JMT if you're deciding between two options.

Can I get my recommendation without giving my email?

Yes. This guide and the optional quiz are free to explore without signing up. Joining our email list is always your choice.

What should I know before applying?

Patch test and follow your product's preparation, application, and rinse instructions. Avoid eyes and mucous membranes. Self-tanner is not sunscreen and does not replace sun protection.

How do I apply tanning foam without missing spots?

Exfoliate first and apply to dry skin. Add foam to an applicator mitt, then blend in overlapping circular motions. Leave your hands and feet until the end and use the product remaining on the mitt for those areas.

Why does the rinse time depend on the product?

JMT has standard and faster-rinse formulas. A rinse time for one base is not a rule for every foam, lotion, or spray solution. Check the instructions for the exact formula you choose. Your color can keep developing after you rinse.

How do I care for my tan after it develops?

Keep your skin moisturized, wash gently, and pat dry. Exfoliating and long, hot baths can speed up fading. Follow your product's care instructions and give the color time to develop before adding more.
